Took this one as a gen ed and it was just alright. I definitely think it was a better choice than some of the other history classes offered, but I didn't absolutely love it.
There was a textbook but I barely used it -- try to get it online for free because you won't need it often. Most of the content comes from the lectures, which last the whole class. There are a couple of papers including a large research paper that requires a lot of sources, so get started on that early. The midterm was a take-home paper, and the final consisted of essay questions that had to do with content from the lecture. There were study guides for both that really helped.
FMK was very passionate about teaching the content and some of the lectures were pretty interesting, but a lot were very boring. He also had mediocre communication about assignments -- he would introduce them very shortly before they were due and didn't give us much time to work on them, including the midterm paper -- we did not know the topics that we were supposed to write about until less than a week before it was due. If you participate a lot in class he will grade you really well for attendance which can help boost your grade if you need it. He was also very quick to respond to emails.
