This course uses the content from statics and solid mechanics for more advanced / real life applications of structural engineering. The course is split into two sections: mechanics analysis of members, and design regulations.
Analysis of Statically Determinate Structures: support types, degree of static indeterminacy (DOSI), DOSI for trusses, DOSI for frames, stability, static equilibrium, method of joints, method of sections, shear and bending moment diagrams. Influence Lines: tabulation method, equation method, qualitative method, Muller-Breslau Principle, live loads and maximum influence. Deflection of Structures: elastic curves, elastic beam theory, integration method, boundary and endpoint conditions, external work, strain energy, virtual work method, Castigliano's Second Theorem method, temperature and fabrication effects, superposition principle. Analysis of Statically Indeterminate Structures: force method, displacement method, double integration method, multiple redundant forces, symmetric structure...read more
Very nice and knowledgeable. Slides are posted in advance, and he goes through almost all examples in depth in class. Exams are weighted less than other courses, and assignments are graded generously. Also very approachable during office hours.
Use the examples as practice problems along with assignments and tutorials. Exams were very fair such that assignment problems were representative of the questions on exams. For the limit state section of the course, make a note of where a reference table is, and when to use it, as there are a lot.
