A follow up on the latter half of CIVE 317. This course focuses on designing simple structures using either wood, concrete, or steel according to Canadian design codes. The professor uses his own course pack as a textbook, which can be purchased at copiEUS.
Engineering Design Process: client brief, conceptual design, detailed design, Canadian Standards Association, Limit States Design Design of Wood Structures: wood species, lumber vs. timber, wood grade, material strength factors, member strength factors, designing flexural members, bi-axial bending, designing compression members, designing tension members, combined axial compression and bending, wood selection tables Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures: concrete properties, steel rebar properties, design of reinforced concrete beams, ductile failure mode, resistance factors, non-rectangular cross-sections, minimum reinforcement, rebar spacing, development length, flexural reinforcement, stirrups, simplified method of shear design, flexural deflection, squash resistance of short colum...read more
The professor is very understanding of student needs and tries his best to explain the concepts.
