Course was okay just show up and do the course ware. Doing the courseware makes everything easier.
Professor is really nice and enthusiastic. Makes the lectures less painful.

Despised this course. There's just no connection between everything they give, so success depends a lot on luck. Mark schemes show one thing, returned tests show something else even if you follow the mark scheme and they don't bother regrading. It felt like studying didn't mean anything since short-answer questions would be picked apart to the bone. Did super well on the quizzes, none of that was reflected in tests. Help desks are pretty true to their name though. Tutorials on the other hand, didn't find any value in them since it was all revisited content from the previous week.
The kind of calculus you'd expect from university, basically an extension of Gr12 calculus. Content isn't that hard and it makes sense with enough studying but the way they expect you to apply things is nonsensical -- even if you follow the textbook's proposed method of solution, it's marked incorrectly. The assignments in this class were quizzes and labs. Former were fair, latter had no relevance whatsoever to the course, but both were easy to do well on. Wish there was more weight on them.
He's a nice guy who gives great analogies about the topics, but his explanations to solutions are quite convoluted. Didn't show up to many lectures since it felt fast-paced and a little disorganized. Ended up watching Clement's lecture recordings but I can't say that she was helpful in-person.
Good luck, lord knows you'll need it.

Over all the course was meh. McLean was funny and very kind but just not that great. I wouldn't recommend this it you don't need to take it.
They tried to make it interesting but is just wasn't useful.
Study. Study. Study.

Math 1LS3 is not a difficult class, a lot of concepts were from high school math courses, the new concepts were not too difficult at all, and the class had a good workload that did not feel too heavy. The pace of the lectures was good, the coursepack was a very useful resource, and the childsmath assignments were also great practice!
This is a calc 1 course. Many concepts in this class were covered in grade 12 calculus and advanced functions. The new topics mainly focused on Eulers method, integration, and approximation techniques. A downside to the course content were the jupyter online coding labs which even comp sci students didn’t know how to do because it wasn’t like actual coding but it was coding assignments that related to the course content. However, if you asked the TAs or profs for help they walked through and did the coding problems with you. Overall this course is useful and prepares you well for calc 2 courses such as math 1LT3 or math 1AA3. Math 1LS3/1LT3 and Math 1A03/1AA3 are similar courses, they cover similar topics and are not extremely different other then the fact that 1LS3/1LT3 are more applicati...read more
Dr. McLean explained concepts in a clear and simple way and did not overcomplicate things. Many people found that he taught at a faster pace, however if you are good at math than that should not be a problem. I did not find the pace of his lectures to be too fast at all. He also talks in a loud way that keeps you engaged for the whole lecture. However, he does have messy handwriting but this shouldn’t be a problem if you are following along/taking notes during lectures.
Don’t stress, this course isn’t too difficult especially if you took grade 12 calc then a lot of the content is pretty easy. I did not ever feel the need to do the textbook problems for extra practice as the coursepack was more than enough practice! Also, if you do want to do textbook problems don’t buy the textbook, you can find a pdf of the textbook online for free.

I absolutely hated this course. My professor was awful and i couldn’t understand why he was complicating such simple concepts making it so much harder to understand. It was so bad i had to start attending Erin Clemmins lectures to even try to get a grasp. I heard in this pass this course was fun and manageable but with McLean as the new course coordinator it was not. The TA help is also HORRIBLE. The TA for the tutorials didn’t come prepared and didn’t help explain anything, he also didn’t even show up for the first one and left a room of ~400 people waiting for the whole period. I also tried the TA help desk a few times with friends and the TA’s didn’t even know how to solve some of the problems which made me feel even more helpless for this class. I had almost a 90 in grade 12 calc howev...read more
Horrible, fast paced, and not explained well enough in lectures. Profs would often just skip past things quickly and say to ‘just practice’ and you would be able yo figure it out. Which is not very helpful
Awful. Clemens was the only one who actually cared for students.

I loved this course. It's pretty light and it's literally grade 12 calculus. However, you still need to put a lot of effort in to succeed, like doing Childsmath or the course pack. The labs are a joke, nobody understands them...even some of my computer science friends, haha. The structure of the course is amazing. Very concise and straight to the point. The tests however are a hit or miss. They're literally always ONLY theory or ONLY application. I know the profs aren't responsible for making the tests but cmon. I don't think they're representative of the class content, that's just my opinion, tho. The exam was fair, however. I LOVEDDD having Clements as a prof. She's very helpful and kind. You can tell she actually cares about her students and her jokes are funny (sometimes, haha). Th...read more

Course was very well structured with the 3 tests and 3 labs but the final exam was much more difficult than the tests.
The content was useful and very interesting with real life applications.
Good pace and teaching style, would also always answer questions.
There is always a "none of the above" option on the exams so trust your answers.

Very good course if taught by Clements! Decent pacing and fair tests, especially if you've taken calc before.

Lots of similar topics to IB math. Pretty straightforward content that isn’t too difficult. Tests and exams were also fair but you definitely need to study hard in order to do well in the course. The participation quizzes were easy and short. The labs were an absolute nightmare. They involved coding and if your not a CS major or someone who codes regularly then it’s not gonna make sense. TAs do their best to explain it and sometimes give you the answers.
Great teaching style and went over difficult questions from practice questions and past papers.
GO TO TUTORIAL. The TA will explain how to do the lab and take notes because the lab is very confusing to do. Listen to your TA word for word.

Good course for first year. Good difficulty level, especially if you've done Grade 12 Calculus. Didn't really struggle too much with this one.
