Prof: Quinghong Zhang / Fall 2024

Comments on the course

I hate stats so this class made me cry on a daily basis.

Course Content

For certain people this can be useful. The basic concepts are easy to grasp. Be prepared to use RStudio. I also have no background when it comes to computer coding so I was extra lost. Most of the calculations can be done on a normal graphing calculator (knew how to do most of it already), but the prof wants you to use RStudio, which is one of the main reasons I borderline failed the class.

Comments on the professor

Quinghong is an extremely intelligent professor. I personally have a hard time understanding profs with accents and his is quite thick so I was clueless about what was going on half of the time in the class. Half of the people I sat by ended up dropping it before the semester ended.

Advice

Steer clear of this class if you don't have to take it. Save yourself the tears and stress. NMU doesn't even have a stats tutor either so you can't even go to anyone for help.

Prof: No Clue / Fall 2020

Comments on the course

Fine class, really just a prereq. for a bunch of the higher level classes, so you have to get this out of the way regardless.

Course Content

Can't remember much about the class itself,

Comments on the professor

I'm pretty sure I interacted with him once at our very first class zoom meeting and then everything beyond that was asynchronous. Don't even remember his name to be quite honest.

Advice

Get it over with as quick as you can, especially if it's a degree required course.

Comments on the course

One of the most boring courses NMU has to offer.

Course Content

Literally a 3 hour class dedicated to watching a black and white movie for half of the class and listening to the prof. lecture for the other half. Only took it because I was put in it for my FYE elective credit (since I'm assuming there were literally no other options).

Comments on the professor

I can't even remember his name, but it clearly wasn't relevant. Nothing special

Advice

Don't take it if you don't have to.

Prof: Gabriel Braham / Winter 2021

Jan 31, 2025

Comments on the course

I loved the structure of Gabriel's class. Albeit that it was during Covid, he still saw the light in the dark.

Course Content

You will be doing a manageable amount of reading. If this is still a thing, you get to read Self Help by Leigh Stein which is an amazing book, regardless of being forced to read it for the class. A few essays, but if you're good at yapping, it should be no problem.

Comments on the professor

Gabriel is one of the most humble, personally interesting professors at NMU. He loves to talk about his work with higher level literature courses. He's a really "woke" older guy.

Advice

Taking it online is manageable, you don't really do a lot of crazy anxiety-inducing work, but Gabriel makes it worth taking, especially online.
