Prof: Jack Burnside / Spring 2024

The overall course was amazing. We mostly did work with examining essays and creating our own. Most of the homework was reading passages from a manual that the professor passed out at the beginning of every unit. For the manual work, there were short answer and critical reading questions that could be answered on Canvas. After each essay we did, we would do a writing reflection which is a minimum of 500 words and is graded for thoughtfulness and reflection. The conversations that we have in class are intriguing as well, with our argument essay unit starting out with a debate over whether a hot dog was a sandwich and if ChatGPT should be allowed in colleges. Overall, a very enjoyable class that I would highly recommend.
The content of the class is mostly working toward essay writing. There are four that you will complete throughout the semester; those being a narrative, rhetorical analysis, campus literacy (basically describing a campus service), and an argument essay. Having taken AP Language in high school, this is pretty similar to that and its easy due to the preparation that I personally had from that class.
Professor Burnside is an amazing professor. He is very friendly and is always there to help if you need something. During conferences, he gives very good feedback and is very approachable.
I don't really have any advice for what I should have known before taking this class, but I do have some words of wisdom. This class is great for developing your writing skills. If you are someone like. me who likes to write political essays for fun, there will be topics you can from that will help you have a blast. You can really get into your element in this class and it will help you hone your skills.
