Comments on the course

It is not too difficult to get an A in this class, but it does not properly teach you Java. There are not enough ungraded opportunities to learn. I found myself seeking outside resources like free websites to try to learn on my own because class was not sufficient. I never felt prepared for labs or projects, and I needed a lot of help on them where I should have only needed some guidance. I am walking away not being able to recreate past labs and projects. I do not feel prepared for Csci 211.

Course Content

This course is about Java, a programming language. Joey brings his own notes, based on the textbook, to class and lectures on them. There is a lab each week that relates to the topic we’re learning about. Outside of class, there are larger projects that are due every couple of weeks. There are a few exams.

Comments on the professor

Joey was enthusiastic about the course and always encouraged questions. He was easily accessible outside of class. I was discouraged to go to his office hours for help with projects because I thought he wouldn’t break it down as simply as I needed. It seemed that he could offer guidance but not walk you through it. He explained his notes well and regularly asked the class if they needed more explanation.

Advice

I would try to learn Java on my own before taking this class. If I took it again, I would go to the department’s tutors more frequently with questions and projects. Use the textbook to prepare for exams.
