Prof: Subho Chatterjee / Spring 2022
Nov 8, 2023
Out of the three classes in the series, 7C is definitely organized the most coherently. Unfortunately, it is just as confusing, badly explained, and somewhat nonsensical as the rest of the 7 series. The only reason I did well is because I would spend a lot of time doing every single practice quiz, helping other students, and with my TA (SHOUT OUT TO PAVEL!!). Having a good TA is really important for this class, it makes everything so much easier.
You'll learn about waves (interference, light, particle-in-a-box, standing waves, doppler effect, etc. with sound and then light), refraction, optics, electric charges and fields, magnetic fields, and electromagnetism. Definitely the only thing that's kind of useful for life science is optics. Warning, the quizzes are much more "do you understand the concept enough to apply it to a new scenario" than they are similar to the practice quizzes. On most of the quizzes, I had to figure out a new concept on the spot. The final had some conceptual questions, and insane brand-new scenarios, average was like a 39%.
Not great, not bad though. Davi is worse, so Chatterjee is definitely the better one out of the two. He'll explain most of the content not too far in depth, since you're supposed to really understand it during lab. Lectures are more of an overview of concepts you've already struggled through in lab. Chatterjee's slides are very nice, though, so that's a bonus.
Ask for help, form study groups, and ASK QUESTIONS TO YOUR TA!! They want you to succeed, but are trapped in the terribleness of this course. Be prepared for the quizzes to be nuts, and the curve to be beefy. Spend time on the concepts and you'll do alright, but it'll be more time than you think. The required workload isn't too much, so you'll have to kind of go out of your way to practice and study. Know that literally nobody likes this class, not even the TAs. Good luck and godspeed!
