While the concepts regarding the interplay of art and life were interesting and some of the artists actually reached deep into my mind, this class was one of the worst classes I've taken at UCSB. I expected a lot better from a university-level art class and I couldn't help but think back to when I took Humanities in high school and appreciated how actually liberating an Art-English class had been. This class makes a lot of promises that it may or most likely live up to (all based on the work of the TA's). An easy A BUT that's exactly what I thought before being handed a grade of 89 (B+).
2 mandatory classes to attend each week: one being a lecture and the other being a section. Each week there would be a new project and based on the pace of the TA (TA's are granted A LOT of liberty in how they teach and run the class), there would or would not be any other work to be done - i.e. readings, discussion posts, etc.
Mr Murgida, who knows a great deal about art and brings art into life and helps the students to think a little bit deeper about the art that exists around them and what they are creating, is not the best lecturer in terms of reading from his lecture notes throughout the entirety of the lecture and actually "teaching" very little. When I did happen to approach Mr Murgida and hear him teach without the need of reading from a script, he was phenomenal and his voice needs to be heard.
TA grading can be quite hard as this class is VERY, VERY attendance heavy. Some TAs are uncompromising and it can grow to be an issue -- for example, I was not excused from class and was actually marked down on attendance even as I alerted my TA and Professor well before-hand that I would be absent due to a religious holiday (which was officially recognized by UCSB and the entire country!).
