Prof: Carmen Kerl / Fall 2021

The course is mostly structured in a teach-it-yourself format, and the instructor just provides grading with feedback with no support for the materials. The actual materials provided aren't that great, and you can easily find materials online that are much more useful. The course is very heavy on group work. There is group work every week and for each chapter you have to do a group skit. So two group meetings on certain weeks. You also have alternating linguameetings and instructor meetings. There are quizzes every week that can vary in amount from six to 21, but were unlimited try, and exams for every chapter. There are also dialogues with audio recordings for every chapter, but the audio recordings are poor in quality.
The content is a beginner's german course.
She was ok. She expected you to put in work and seemed to be nicer to some students that she thought were doing that. Occasionally made comments in grading feedback that were a little questionable. Always graded in a timely manner which was nice.
I didn't realize how heavy on group work this class is so prepare time wise for that. Also, if you are planning to take this class and do not understand any german at all, then you shouldn't take it unless you have a lot of free time for the semester. My group members that didn't know any german struggled a lot and I had to help them quite a bit with understanding the material. My rating reflects on someone knowing some beginner german, if you know none, then it's a very hard and time consuming class that will most likely frustrate you.
