The professor I have is phenomenal. The problem is the class. Half of ear training is transcribing. As a non-theory or composition major, I find this class to be wasted. I expected to learn actual ear training as it pertained to understanding notes and getting in key. This is part of it. But the transcription is extremely difficult for at least half of my class. Also if you don't (or otherwise can't) sing you're in trouble. If you don't know solfege, you're in trouble. If you can't sight read (notes or rhythm) you're in trouble. There is a fundamentals class for theory and frankly there should be one for ear training. Get a tutor before you ever start class. Don't take this class your first semester. Get theory and maybe piano under your belt. Use that time to work with a tutor to PREPARE for this class. If you're not completely in love with being in music, then don't even bother. This class will crush every dream you ever had.
