Prof: Melanie Walsh / Winter 2022
May 2, 2022
Take this course if you want a solid foundation of a relevant, easy programming language (R) taught by a caring teacher. I liked how high-output this class was in terms of projects and group work, it's better than just doing exams constantly. With a professor who is very engaging like Walsh, this is the best.
Mostly group activities and individual labs and projects that introduce you to R, data visualization, and APIs. Lecture slides are posted before class which is super helpful. She was willing to share lesson plans with me too so that I could learn things that weren't covered in class but could have been.
Prof. Walsh was very organized and kind. She was always willing to talk with students and help them understand the material, even if she goes through them quickly.
You don't HAVE to use GitHub for the assignments in this class, unlike other profs' sections, but it would be nice to learn it, especially if you plan on applying to INFO as a major. She updates her syllabus based on student feedback, which is also nice.

Prof: Michael Freeman / Winter 2021

For the remote course, there are: - 4 small coding projects and then a final group project that you work on throughout the quarter. - Weekly reading quizzes. It's not that bad, though, because the professor was very accommodating and it was easy to do well because of that. He allows you to resubmit as many times as you want for a higher grade.
Read the textbook ahead of time if you can, it's actually very helpful.
Freeman was very enthusiastic and helpful, probably one of the best professors I've had.

R is hard but this is a good intro. Prof is good at explaining things and helping with code. Class is backloaded, so be prepared to do a lot of work in the last 2 weeks.
Get acquainted to GitHub early!
I took a different INFO class with Mike Freeman later on and he was way better, his 201 was probably better. Janes is still good though.
