Comments on the course

If I could take it all over again I would. This course has changed my view on so many things related to our current society. Especially a very important course for those who want to pursue medicine, taking this course is essential in helping you approach your future career and helps you understand and look at the world in a whole new perspective. It challenges your beliefs of current society. Not only that, it helps you overcome your own personal obstacles and challenges with familial drama, different sorts of trauma and much more! It has helped me grow as a person and I will never stop recommending it to my peers.

Course Content

Medicine and Narrative. Narrative and Healing. Colonialism, viruses, and other stories. Pandemic Entanglements, Life writing and psychotherapy: Mapping the self. Family dramas, Trauma, Bio politics of Medicine, Environmental Racism, and what it means to be Human.

Comments on the professor

Elena Basil, and the TA for this course, Natasha Alcalde are very understanding evaluators. Elena goes through every course topic with care so that even if you are not caught up with the material, you are still able to understand what is going on for that week. They both are very fair in terms of marking and will help you through any difficulties through the course. If there is an emergency, or overall, if you just feel very overwhelmed and cannot submit your assignment on time, they always understand. I respect both of them very much and will miss being in the lectures with them.

Advice

There is a lot of reading and writing for this course. If you are not a reader, it might be a bit difficult to understand the concepts that are being talked about however, if you try, maybe with audiobooks or overall summaries of the books, you will not be disappointed with what you are learning. I wish I had taken this course during a time when I was not too busy with my other courses so that I could carefully read every material that was given to me and fully absorb every life-changing lesson. If I am not too busy in my following years, I will definitely do so but I definitely recommend.
