I really loved this class overall -- you will actually learn things that you can apply to real life and gain a much better understanding of the world around you. Class participation is a must because it really helps build community -- everyone had such a great mutual respect for one another in the class and I am still friends with many of my classmates.
There is a textbook that you will have take-home quizzes on at the end of each week, but they were usually very short. There are also three big papers throughout the whole quarter. The lectures and discussions were very interesting and helpful so go to class.
Professor McGinnis was really great and her lectures were awesome. She really helped build community through the in class discussions we had. She is a little picky about grading and expects you to go the extra mile if you want to get an A (doing the minimum requirements will get you a C), but it's nothing too taxing.
I would definitely recommend trying to take this course before any other communications courses if you have to take them, since a lot of the content in 102 and 103 builds off of the ideas from 101.
