Prof: Allysa Lumley / Fall 2020
Dec 23, 2021
This is the introductory calculus course, with pre-calculus review, taken by STEM students in U0 who were not able to enroll in MATH 140. It builds off of the Grade 12 advanced functions, and calculus & vectors courses in high school. I took the course during COVID and it went pretty well. The lectures were well paced, with recordings readily available. Unlike other professors, professor Lumley used Twitch. The webwork assignments were quite doable, and the exams were fair. Due to having pre-calculus review, this course has four weekly 1 hour lectures rather than the standard 3.
Pre-calculus review: functions + inverse functions (polynomial, reciprocal, trigonometric, exponential, logarithmic, square root), graphing techniques + asymptotes*, trigonometry basics (definition of sine, cosine, tangent, their reciprocals and inverses, special triangles, radians, identities). Calculus material: limits, indeterminate forms + l'Hopital's Rule, Squeeze Theorem, differentiation (limit definition, techniques, implicit, logarithmic), linearization of a function, Extreme Value Theorem, Intermediate Value Theorem, Rolle's Theorem, Mean Value Theorem, very simple antidifferentiation. *Will be explored more in-depth using calculus concepts
Very nice and supportive. Explained the material well with neat diagrams and drawings.
Do the webwork problems and attend the tutorials. Review your high school notes.
