Prof: Michael Scoggins / Spring 2022
Apr 23, 2022
Taken this class several times, it's just that fun. Scoggins is a delight to have and I've even TA'ed for him before. The class is all about various types of ballroom dance (think swing, rumba, waltz, tango, chacha). Swing and Waltz are consistent across classes but he lets the class decide by vote which other ones they want to learn. The pace is very relaxed, you get to meet a lot of people, and you don't have to take tests or anything. It can be a bit of a workout, but the maneuvers are really cool and you pick up a lot of social skills. Literally zero regrets about having duplicate credits for this class. If I could take it after graduating, I would
The class teaches a variety of ballroom dances, but honestly you learn a lot about physics, social skills, and the reach of dance. All courses will cover swing, waltz, and meringue (which is super fun to use at clubs). Depending on students' choice, class can also cover salsa, rumba, chacha, foxtrot, tango, and more. It's definitely a great conversation starter and quick way to impress people; also instills a sense of confidence.
Scoggins is hilarious and ridiculously well-trained. He has his own dance studio, has performed on cruises, and even did a stint as a double for the original power rangers. He can dance professionally, knows the best places to go if you want to continue learning beyond class, and provides extra dance opportunities for students. As an instructor, Scoggins is very approachable and outgoing. He sees students as equals and is more than willing to joke around. He works well with students and will repeat instructions and maneuvers as many times as it takes. Really patient and fun.
You can be a lead regardless of gender identity. Attendance is crucial. If you miss, you can make it up and you can catch up prettily easily, but Scoggins is a stickler for attendance.
