This is one of the best classes I have ever taken. I say that partially because of my fascination with the ocean, but also largely because of Dr. Paddack's enthusiastic, clear, and friendly personality.
The course begins by laying out the properties of water (temperature and salinity) to understand how they affect the greater marine environment. Grade is based on a 30pt ocean journal (a writing assignment based on observing the ocean & the scientific method), 6 quizzes (15pts each) based on material from lecture, 3 exams (100pts each), one 100pt presentation, some pre-presentation work (31pts), 15 lab packets where you gather data and answer questions (15pts each). Dr. Paddack is very enthusiastic about teaching and clearly loves the ocean! She lays out clear expectations while still being accommodating (for example she drops the lowest quiz grade and offers some extra credit). She always treats students with respect and listens to questions and concerns. The classroom becomes an inviting place. Fantastic professor!
After every lab, try to summarize for yourself the main takeaway because it can be easy to lose sight of that with the details and the length of lab. It always relates back to the lecture for that day/week.
