Incredibly informative class taught by an incredibly knowledgeable professor. One large group project (nearly everyone in my class would have been a great groupmate) and a fairly intense midterm (time-wise, many questions!), but all in all the meat of evaluation was through class participation. Dr. Troeung was incredibly gracious with me when a family member passed away unexpectedly and I needed to take time off from class, and the units she focuses on opened a lot of doors for both self-directed and cultural critical analysis in my future. Would recommend this class to any ENGL student—even if you don't love writing, you'll get a lot out of this class and the probing discussions the class facilitated.
Go to class and participate in the discussion! I didn't really study any material outside of class (other than reading some required books, all of which were page-turners), and the few times I hadn't completed a reading before class time weren't negative by any means, and I could still participate using more global, abstract concepts we'd been covering. The midterm took place in the 50-minute class period: nobody was finished by the bell, and Dr. Troeung extended the time we had about five or so minutes into the passing period. It was pretty stressful—use those accommodations if you have them!
