Prof: Tom Stahovich / Winter 2022
May 17, 2022
This is an intro course that familiarizes students with the working of MATLAB and its respective coding language. Labs every week will take you the better part of a day to complete. Student complaints would fall upon deaf ears, and class average on the final was 65%.
Heavy linear algebra themes. Matrixes and matrix operations are some of the biggest topics, along with vector components. The MATLAB half of the course was literally learning a new language: variable management, indexing, and incrementing nested loops. Learning about those topics is one thing, articulating that logic into code is another.
Stahovich seems like a decent person, but his teaching was abysmal at times. Examples in class were often left for students to complete, usually ending in confusion and frustration. The TA's basically ran the lab aspect of the class, and Stahovich was infamously inaccessible to students.
Monday Lab students would have to learn and code the content for the week at the same time, so try and avoid having Monday lab. Definitely find a group to help each other on the Labs, you will cry if you go in alone with no coding knowledge (Me). See if you can find someone who's taken the class before to help, a *lot* of the class was students repeating the course.
