It was an interesting, generally easy class I took to fulfill my Gen Ed credit. There is a lot of reading assigned and requirements to see plays outside of class.
I enjoyed that we studied theatre across different cultures. The content isn’t really that useful if you’re not interested in theatre or pursuing some career in the arts.
Professor Mitchell makes lectures humorous and enjoyable. His style of teaching is easy to understand. The only aspect I didn’t like was that he opposed the use of technology in his class.
Be prepared to read plays and see shows outside of class (typically late at night). Also, don’t buy all the plays immediately (which can end up costing you around $100) - most can be found online for free.

Great Gen Ed filler, fun lectures! Get Tom as your TA, he's the best.
You learn lots of general knowledge about theatre and get to see some fun plays.
Read the plays and discuss them with people before the quiz! Some quizzes are ultra specific and not super easy.

The textbook is free which is nice, and I've heard that in non-COVID years you get free tickets to see plays. We watched videos instead, but the evaluation papers on the plays weren't hard. The worst part about the class is definitely the textbook readings and quizzes - I remember having to read 70 pages of technical theater production for one quiz.
I don't think I ever contacted him, his lectures were fine.
Only take if you need the credit like I did. Or if you're a through and through theater person.

Overall the course is pretty simple as long as you attend the lectures (if you're in person). Attendance is mandatory. Dr. Mitchell is pretty engaging as well, and overall it was really enjoyable, especially as a gen ed class.
You'll have to read lots of different plays and you will have to buy some of these plays, but the majority of the plays are fairly interesting. There are also a lot of essays throughout the course since you have to write reflections after the plays. It's all really manageable though as long as you pay attention and put some effort into the assignments.
Dr Mitchell made the class surprisingly fun with his humor. His passion in this topic can be seen throughout the class, and it made the whole lesson a lot more enjoyable. It felt like I was listening to a story while in the lecture. There were some times where it got a bit boring, but overall it was great.
You will have to watch 3 plays outside of class, which does take at least 2 hours of your time. However, the plays I had watched were enjoyable. Be prepared to also put in a good chunk of your time on the essays and go to the lectures since everything on the exam will be based off of the lectures (he doesn't share PowerPoints).
