Comments on the course

My favorite class at UF so far. The material was just challenging enough to be intriguing but not too hard as to cause major burn out or great frustration.

Course Content

This class has a little bit of everything, there is some geology, chemistry and physics related elements but it's mainly looking at thin sections and working to identify minerals and their composition.

Comments on the professor

The professor is the best, he really works to break down the material in a highly understandable way, he goes over exam expectations well and I appreciated that a lot.

Advice

I wish I had brushed up on my knowledge of ion bonding and things like that but it's not necessary, the professor does a great job catching you up to speed and setting a good tone for really learning the material.

Comments on the course

Fantastic course if you are interested in mycology. I really do empathize that you NEED to to have some interest in mycology because a big component of the course is the final fungal collections project where you will be going out into nature and collecting and then id'ing 35 different genuses of fungi.

Course Content

Quizzes, a final exam, make wikipedia pages, and fungal collections project

Comments on the professor

Dr. Smith is the GOAT. Very passionate and knowledgeable.

Advice

You don't need to know anything coming in, but some basic microscopy skills will prove useful over the semester.
