Prof: Collin Jennings / Fall 2021
Apr 20, 2022
It's a decent class for Lit distributions. I can't imagine taking this as a non-English major, though. If you're not interested in lit and you're thinking about taking it to fulfill the Miami Plan, 100% do NOT recommend.
Content is what it says on the tin. The readings are interesting so long as you can find something interesting in them (themes, wordplay, history, etc) If you have no/little interest in Britain and its literary history, this class will be a drag. It's useful from an analytical perspective and seeing how trends evolve over time in BritLit.
Jennings is knowledgeable and absolutely fantastic with feedback. He always gets back on it, gives you specific areas to target, and adjusts your grade according to the work you put in revising. His passion for the subject helps too. However, he's very dry. I also had him for 298- he's improved since then, but many of my classmates tended to fall asleep during his lectures. If you tend to zone out, I'd reconsider the class. Readings are usually reasonable but can sometimes be excessively long- check the syllabus for those weeks and plan accordingly.
Find ways to keep yourself engaged while taking notes. Look at the slides on your computer while he lectures, focus on what he's saying and try to summarize it- whatever you can do to maintain interest.
